Why are the photos too dark when viewed on the internet? Photographs prepared for use on the Internet usually suffer from a lack of detail in the highlight and shadow areas. Especially TFT monitors can be problematic. Calibrating your monitor for brightness and contrast can improve your viewing experience.

What is stock photography? Stock photography means photographs of objects, places, landscapes, nature, events, people that are bought and sold on a royalty-free basis and can be used and reused for commercial design purposes. Royalty free allows you to use your licensed stock image unlimited times for one price. We also sell computer graphic designs such as backgrounds, textures, illustrations, clip-art and vectors. For designers, stock is a method to obtain professional photos or other images for a reasonable price. Also the buyer has the advantage of choosing the right picture from a big number of photographs and images. Designers can buy stock photographs in more than one way: through a subscription (method used by buyers who constantly need pictures for their business, they can download limited number of pictures for a limited time) or through a single picture download (for occasional buyers, or for personal purpose). Royalty free images are bought by magazine editors, web designers, graphic designers, art directors, and other creative purposes such as posters, flyers, brochures, print advertising and much more.

What format are the photos in? What is a JPEG? All ArtQuests.net photos are in RGB/ JPEG format and at least 300 dpi resolution (suitable for high quality printing). JPEG is a standardized image compression process (Joint Photographic Experts Group) designed to compress full color or gray scale photographs to aid in the ease of downloading from the internet, without compromising image quality. After downloading the compressed file, the photograph will then be opened at its full resolution. Our images are meant to be as versatile as possible for the end user. When an RGB image is converted to CMYK, several parameters must be taken into consideration, including paper stock, four-color film output device, layout software programs used, types of inks used, and special effects intended by you, the designer. We don't want to make these decisions for you.
What is the quality and size of the pictures? Most of our original images are over 8 megapixels in size, producing a digital image over 3500 pix wide. This ensures that your prints will be very crisp. You can rest assured that when you select an image for purchase it will be individually optimized for the best quality before it's printed. We do offer free sample images to download to see the quality of our images. Quality and image size are very important especially if you plan to make a big print of the photo. We sell the same image at different resolutions and different prices (the bigger the image size, the bigger the price). If you plan to use an image for web, then you should ask for smaller images (ex: 1050 x 700 pixels) because they work just fine for web sites.
What is the image resolution? Resolution is a measurement of the number of pixels that make up a digital photograph. The more pixels your images have, the better quality can be achieved when printing large sizes. If you are serious about selling your work, submit high-resolution files, preferably having at least 6 million pixels. Photo resolution and quality are extremely important for making a good print, and publishers of printed media pay close attention to these factors. Generally speaking, digital photos with larger dimensions (high resolution) and larger file sizes (low compression) will produce higher quality prints. If your photo is of the higher technical quality than the average, a higher price is well justified. The following links will further explain the concept of image resolution.
How large can I print your images? In general our images can safely be enlarged to 150% of their original image size without affecting the quality. However, how large you can print a digital image will vary greatly on how you are outputting it, what your target resolution is and what kind of hardware you are outputting it with. The composition, sharpness and amount of detail in the image itself will also affect your output size. For more information you should consult directly with your printer or service bureau to find out the specific capabilities of the device you're working with. Select the resolution that satisfies the print size you demand.
What sizes of prints do you offer? For most photos we offer 3 different sizes: 20" x 30" (50 x 75 cm), 16" x 24" (40 x 60 cm), 8" x 12" (20 x 30 cm). However, some sizes are not available for certain photos due to an insufficient resolution. All of our royalty free images can be purchased on a range of surfaces from high quality Glossy, Matte, to Lustre (we may offer giclee art prints and wall posters). Selected images are also available for download as JPEG files allowing you to make your own prints or use the image as royalty free stock subject to the ArtQuests.net end user licensing agreement. We create our prints as large as possible. Sometimes photos do not have the same length/width-proportion as our printing paper. We then print the photo as a whole as big as possible on our printing paper.

Will you send to my country? We ship our prints & posters worldwide based on postal shipping charges. Shipping and handling (S&H) is calculated on an order-quantity and shipping-method basis. The size of your order and shipping method you choose will ultimately determine what your (S&H) charges will be. Print Orders are shipped on the next business day in all cases except for extremely large orders. Currently, we can ship products within the United States and Canada as well as several foreign countries. Prints should arrive at your home within 10 days.

I received my print and I'm not happy with it. What can I do? The print you receive will be of the highest quality and retains all of the detail and tonal characteristics of the original image. However, due to the nature of the way images are displayed on the internet and differences in monitor calibration, the full tonal characteristics of the original image may not be displayed entirely accurately on your monitor. If you're unhappy with your prints, you can always send them back to us and we will fully reimburse the money you paid.

How soon will I be able to download my JPEG's? Because of fraud and piracy all of our credit card & PayPal orders are reviewed before they are approved. Most orders will be approved almost instantly and you will have access to download the files you have purchased although in some cases there may be a 2-8 hour waiting period while our staff reviews the order. In rare cases there may be a 24-48 hour period while our credit card processor reviews the transaction. Your photo prints should arrive at your home within 10 days. Download orders will expire after 10 days (Number of days a customer can download photos from their order).

Do you offer refunds? Due to the "intangible" nature of digital photographs, once your purchase is completed and you've download the image file, we cannot authorize a refund. There is no way for us to confirm that you've destroyed the photograph you downloaded consequently we do not offer refunds on digital image files. If you are a graphic artist or designer, you can request a "comp" to layout your design prior to showing your client. Comps are delivered at a resolution close to the resolution you intend to license and have a visible watermark. On a rare occasion we will make exceptions on a case by case basis.

If I purchase a subscription are there any other fees? No, a monthly subscription allows you access to download any 10 photos for Only $150.00, while a year subscription allows you access to download any 50 photos for Only $400.00. The prices you see are the prices you pay. We don't have any hidden charges. On rare occasions our merchant processors may not send the information of your transaction to our system, so your account may not be automatically activated. Therefore, if you have made a purchase of our monthly or yearly subscription and you are not able to access photos using your details, send a support request.

Are there any restrictions on my use of the photos that I purchase? Yes. While ArtQuests.net offers great freedoms and a wide range of uses, we do not allow the redistribution of our photos, or allow the use of our photos within products that are mass distributed in any type of archive format. There are some uses that require payment of a "commercial use" fee and other uses that are strictly prohibited. You are not allowed to scan, photograph or otherwise reproduce any prints purchased from us. Account sharing is no different than distributing our materials to others. Individual accounts must be purchased by your friends and colleagues. If you are a design studio or advertising company, we'll need your client's name that you are buying the license for. It's important to state that you cannot use that image for another client without first purchasing a second license. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for further explanation. For a detailed list of authorized uses and prohibitions visit our Licensing page.

What does it mean to "license" an image? When you license an image you purchase the right to use the image for a specific use. There are different types of image licensing options. Before deciding what type of imagery to use, consider your image requirements and the way you are going to use it. There are also differences in quality and content for each type of license. As a general rule, images that are unique and hard to find elsewhere should be licensed rights-managed while more common images are better candidates for royalty-free. If you're unsure which model is best for you start with rights-managed. Once you license an image royalty-free there is no going back. Do not license an image using more than one licensing model at a time. Once all rights-managed licenses have expired on an image you may move it to royalty-free.
How much will it cost me to "license" an image? Rights-managed products are licensed on a use-by-use basis. The fee for using the product is calculated from several factors including size, placement, duration of use and geographic distribution. Stock photography licensing fees are primarily based on factors relating to the 'exposure' the image will receive. In other words, how big, how often, and for how long will the photo be seen. For example, a photo used inside a national monthly magazine has less 'exposure' than the same photo used on the cover. This would be less 'exposure' than when used on the home page of a large international corporation's web site for one year. Other factors that affect the licensing fee are the type of usage itself (editorial, corporate, advertising, product) as well as any exclusivity required (i.e., a calendar publisher would not want the same photo to appear in competitor's calendars in the same year.) As there are so many possible photo uses, each with its particular details, it is difficult to create a simple price list. The licensing fee is calculated using a pricing matrix. Your licensing fee will be based on a combination of the Usage Type (ex. Corporate: Annual Reports), Quantity (ex. 50,000-100,000), and Size (ex. 1/2 page). At the time you order a rights-managed image, you will be asked to submit information that will specify the usage rights to be granted in order to determine your licensing fee. Minimum stock photo licensing fee is $150. Many uses typically run $200 to $1,000 although fees could exceed $10,000 in some instances. For pricing information contact ArtQuests.net with the following information (If your licensing specifications are not listed below and/or do not meet your requirements, please "Contact Us"):
Use (book, brochure, web site, packaging, advertisement, trade show...)
Size & placement (inside 1/2 page, cover, web home page...)
Print run and/or length of time of usage.
Any exclusivity you require.

What is Royalty-Free Licensing? The Royalty Free sites don't sell images to you; they license them on behalf of the photographer or stock photo library. Royalty- free images can be used repeatedly without having to pay for every usage or reporting each usage for legal documentation. By selling a royalty -free photo, a photographer permits a buyer unlimited use of the photo, including any photo alterations such as, but not limited to cropping, color alterations, etc. Photographer remains a copyright owner of the photo. Essentially, "royalty-free". means you can use the image for any type of project you like for one end use client with very few restrictions. You cannot resell or give away the image or the rights to the image. When purchasing a license from ArtQuests.net, you are buying the non-exclusive rights on behalf of your client or end user, to publish the image. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions of Use for more detailed information. The opposite of royalty-free is rights-managed licensing. A rights-managed photo needs a specific individual license stating the audience and material surrounding the photo and it is more expensive than royalty-free photos.
How much does a Royalty-Free license cost? Our royalty-free licenses are available in five sizes and are priced accordingly: Pricing is based on image size and quality. The price, size (pixel dimensions and file size), and quality (dpi), of each image is listed next to the watermarked preview image. Royalty Free images are based on file size. Determining the right file size to meet the needs of the job requires careful checking and consideration. Image selections are to be based on the size that it will be reproduced (in inches/millimeters) and the print resolution (in dpi) which indicates how much detail will be included in every inch printed. Upsizing an image (expanding) will always reduce some of its quality. An image's desired resolution is solely dependent on how you're going to be using that image. Royalty-Free photo prices are based on the size of the image purchased. Most common sizes for some standard uses of stock photos: 8 1/4 x 11 3/4 (A4) for stationery and documents, 5 7/8 x 8 1/4 (A5) for books, 4 1/8 x 5 7/8 (A6) for postcards. Our prices are per image and based on the image size/resolution you require (we also offer subsription options). Sign up for a one year subscription and get 50 downloads for Only $400.00 /year! Large format prints (such as billboards) may be printed at lower resolutions of under 150dpi (the image is less detailed because it is viewed from farther away) although it's worth checking with your print department before you start. File size is defined as the size when the image is opened. We convert the image to a jpeg for transmission, which reduces the file size. We recommend you open and save the file as a tiff format before you do any additional work on the image. This will restore the image to its full un-compressed file size. DPI (dots per inch) is a term used to express resolution. It refers to the number of pixels representing one square inch of image information. A high DPI results in greater image detail for printing purposes, but it also means larger file sizes and memory usage. For example, a 1" x 1" image at 72 DPI contains 5,184 (72 x 72) dots (pixels), while the same 1" x 1" image at 300 DPI contains 90,000 (300 x 300) dots. Pixel (px) is the common term for "picture element", the smallest part of television, monitor or photographic images. There are millions of picture elements in any digitized photograph (a 1"x1" square inch image at 72 DPI contains 5184 pixels). Pixels are the units that are manipulated in photo editing software. In bitmap images, the more pixels, the higher the resolution. Enlarging a pixel-based image too much can compromise its quality.

How do I copyright my photo? You don't. It's already copyrighted. You don't need to submit a form, and you don't have to use the "©" symbol or a digital watermark -- those are just customary ways of identifying the copyright owner. Copyright is an intellectual property right which (in U.S. and European law) is automatically bestowed exclusively upon the author (you) at the instant the artwork is created, e.g. when you press the shutter release. If you took the picture, you own the copyright, and it's yours to use. However, the "©" symbol can be used to let the publishers know who is the copyright owner of the image. The photographer is entitled to disable file(s) from his portfolio at any time. The photographer is responsible for any challenges made by any third party regarding copyrights in the image.

Always upload your photos at the best quality available (maximum resolution) to ensure large quality prints so we can offer all print sizes.

Can I sell photos taken by other photographers? No, all photo's are automatically copyrighted by their respective owners, so it would be unfair to make money from the work of someone else.

How much money can a photographer make? That depends on the quality and size of your file (picture). Submitting large sizes does improve your sales potential as many designers simply prefer the larger sized files. The more you upload, the better the chance of making sales. Quality and quantity are directly related to your earning potential. We manage to promote and increase your sales. Depending on our payment policy the photographer gets 80 % per download and 25 % per printed item. Actually 25 % commission on the selling price of a printed item is quite high. With printing, packaging, and customer service added together, our costs go up to 65 % of the selling price of most printed items (Which means you are getting 25 % and we earn 10 %). If you think your prices are not high enough and would like custom pricing done for your items, you can always contact us and we will individually change the list price of your items. Please note that this will not only affect commissions (going up) but also sales (going down). However if you feel your photo's should earn better, contact us and we will change the respective prices. Please login to your photographer account and check out the link to "How Can I Promote My Photo Gallery?" • Check the What’s Selling section regularly to find out what types of images are in demand. • Review the tips for selling Photos and which subjects are needed most.

What is a Model Release? What is a Property Release? Model Release is a signed release from the person/s depicted in a stock photo, giving consent for his or her likeness to be used for commercial purposes as described in the release. Every image with an identifiable person (or face) requires a model release. The model release is a document that must be signed by the model and it states that the model agrees with the picture being used by other people in commercial or other purposes. This model release is required even for self portraits; in case of pictures of children the model release must be signed by one of the parents. Model releases can be downloaded from the following link. We ask you to upload a model release together with the pictures. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct model releases for your license use and that you comply with the relevant local laws. Property Release is a signed release from the owner/s of property depicted in a stock photo, giving consent for the image depicting his or her property to be used for commercial purposes. A property release is a written agreement between the property owner and the photographer where the property owner has granted the photographer permission to use the photographs commercially. Releases generally permit the use of the image(s) for all purposes, with exceptions for controversial, sensitive or defamatory uses. We ask you to upload a property release together with the pictures. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct property releases for your license use and that you comply with the relevant local laws.

What are your Quality Standards, Checklists and Guidelines? ArtQuests.net welcomes all experience levels of photographers and non-photographers, but reserves the right to decline images in its discretion, including reasons based on the following criteria (most common causes for rejecting a photo). Choose subjects that are rare or lacking at the site in order to increase the visibility of your photo among other photos. The more similar photos exist, the less likely your photo will sell (even though your photo may be more unique or more artistic than other photos). Do not send photos that spread hate or violence, pornographic images or revealing nudes, presenting copyright issues, vacation or immediate family snapshots (more suitable for family albums). Such Photos are automatically rejected. We encourage our members to submit high quality professional level photos, which have high potential to interest photo buyers. We compiled these checklists and guidelines to help you ensure your submissions possess the expected degree of standards and to help you increase your sales. All submissions are screened and we reserve the right to remove any photo that in our discretion, does not hold the required degree of standards, or violates any of the restrictions. Please accept our submission guidelines and thank you for your considerations!
